Shared Access completes complex multi-operator rooftop project at Dundrum Town Centre

The project has enabled 5G upgrades for eir and Vodafone Ireland alongside the relocation of Three Ireland’s 5G equipment within a shared rooftop site.

At one of Ireland’s leading retail destinations, equipment from all three operators is housed within a single rooftop shroud. Accommodating the new equipment within this constrained space, while keeping existing services live, required a carefully engineered solution.

To create the additional capacity, Shared Access designed and delivered a bespoke extension to the existing shroud. This enabled Three Ireland’s 5G equipment to be relocated, freeing the space required for the eir and Vodafone Ireland upgrades without affecting neighbouring installations.


Three operators, one agreed design

Accommodating three operators within a single rooftop shroud meant reconciling a complex set of requirements.

Each operator had its own equipment, technical requirements and governance processes. The final design also had to satisfy structural, commercial and aesthetic considerations, alongside the operational requirements of Dundrum Town Centre.

From the outset, the design followed a rigorous development and review process, addressing the full range of operator and site considerations and culminating in approval from all three operators.

Shared Access coordinated the operators and shopping centre management team throughout. Careful planning aligned the relocation of Three Ireland’s equipment with the upgrade programmes for eir and Vodafone Ireland.


Delivering above a live retail destination

The construction phase introduced a different set of challenges.

Installing the shroud extension, structural steelwork and telecommunications equipment required a large mobile crane to be positioned on top of a multi-storey car park, directly in front of one of the centre’s main entrances.

Shared Access worked closely with the Dundrum Town Centre management team to develop and secure approval for a detailed lifting strategy. The operation had to protect the car park structure, provide safe access for the installation teams and minimise disruption to shoppers, retailers and the centre’s day-to-day operations.

The lift enabled the steelwork, shroud materials and operator equipment to be transported safely to the rooftop within a highly constrained working environment.


From construction to completion

The principal construction phase ran from 2 March to 3 April 2026, taking just over four weeks. During that period, the shroud extension was installed, Three Ireland’s equipment was relocated and the various workstreams across the live rooftop site were coordinated.

The remaining operator works were completed in May, bringing the project to a close.

The completed project now accommodates 5G equipment from all three operators within a single shared rooftop structure.

The project demonstrates how Shared Access combines technical expertise, stakeholder coordination and detailed delivery planning to unlock additional capacity at complex existing telecoms sites.

STATE OF THE ART TOWER AT HEATHROW

In August 2022 we completed our largest build to-date. The 45m state of the art tower and secure compound at Heathrow provides coverage for the National Air Traffic Services business, all UK mobile operators (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone) and Transport for London. Installation of Wi-Fi 6 at Berthon Marina, Lymington.

During the busy season, Berthon Marina has up to 250 boats in residence, all with multiple devices connecting to the marina’s Wi-Fi.  This was creating a heavily congested network environment and a poor end user experience. Connection speeds were grinding to a halt, with berth holders and visitors frequently being disconnected or simply unable to connect. Card payments for fuel or food and beverage became impossible to process with all the associated customer frustrations and commercial impact.

Tunnels are historically tough locations to get a phone signal. Traditional masts provide coverage outdoors to locations that can be seen – tunnels by their nature are underground, compact and often have lots of twists and turns that all stop existing outdoor signals from penetrating inside.

The Tyne Tunnel is no different. Originally opened in 1967, the seven miles of tunnels connect the town of Jarrow with North Shields and Howden. The traffic that passes through the tunnel allows vehicles both a way in and out of Newcastle. Over 40,000 vehicles travel through the Tyne Tunnel every day – that’s over 14,000,000 vehicles a year.
